The Chicana/o Studies Degree Program
Chicana/o Studies is an interdisciplinary program that examines the experiences of people of Mexican ancestry in the United States. Grounded in contemporary research and scholarship, Chicana/o Studies consider the social, political and cultural development of a people long rooted in this country. As a multi-disciplinary program, Chicano Studies offers courses in the social sciences, humanities, and basic skills development.
Chicana/o Studies provides students with a breadth of knowledge about this nation’s fastest growing population. A study of Chicanos/Latinos position students to participate in a multicultural society, understand ethnic, racial and cultural diversity in the US, and compete in an increasingly global job market.
A degree in Chicana/o Studies prepares students for a multitude of exciting careers. Students earning a degree in Chicana/o Studies may pursue careers in education, law, social services, public administration, business, health, the arts and more. Students are advised to meet with a counselor to discuss their career goals and degree options.
Students may obtain an Associate of Arts Degree in Chicana/o Studies from ELAC by successfully completing 21 units or more in the major, and additional graduation and/or transfer requirements. Students interested in pursuing a degree in Chicana/o Studies are urged to consult with the department chair, and to meet with a campus counselor for a complete listing of degree and graduation requirements.

What transfer requirements do classes in Chicana/o Studies meet?
Chicana/o Studies classes at ELAC satisfy several Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETCE) and California State University (CSU) Certification requirements. Courses available to students fulfill AREA 3 and AREA 4 of the IGETCE, as well as meeting the CSU Graduation Requirement in U.S. History, Constitution and American Ideals. Classes available also fulfill Section C, Section D and Section E of the CSU General Education Certificate. Students are advised to review a campus catalog for a complete listing of transfer requirements and application due dates.
