The Largest Mural in East L A

MuralIn 1974, the Chicano Studies Department and East Los Angeles College supported the creation of the largest mural ever produced in East Los Angeles. Painted by renowned artist and then Professor of Chicano Studies and Studio Art, Roberto Chavez, the mural was located on the exterior west facing wall of the campus auditorium now known as the Edison Center for the Arts. Prior to the construction of later campus buildings, this mural was visible from the eastbound 60 freeway and was an important contribution to the East Los Angeles burgeoning Chicano mural scene of the 1970’s. Unfortunately, in 1981 the mural was painted over and the campus and the community lost an important landmark for both Chicano Studies and Chicano art.
