With over 30 years of service to students of East Los Angeles and neighboring communities, the Chicana/o Studies Department at East Los Angeles College is devoted to the teaching of classes that explore the historical and contemporary experiences of Chicano/Latino populations in the United States. Our academic program employs an interdisciplinary approach toward the understanding of race, ethnicity and cultural production and the relationship of these critical concerns to empowerment and equality.
As one of the largest community college educational programs focusing on the Chicano/Latino experience in the United States, our department is committed to the academic development of our students and our community through a creative curriculum and stimulating campus events designed to enhance the intellectual quality of life in East Los Angeles. The department is further committed to the recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty, community-based learning, and the teaching of courses that are relevant, diverse, and that provide all of our students with a strong academic foundation in Chicana/o Studies as they matriculate to the university.
Most importantly, we are dedicated to the academic success of our student population as they navigate the higher education pipeline towards their AA, BA, MA and PhD degrees.
